TH 460 - Music and the Mind. This course provides a broad survey of the diverse research in music cognition. Students identify an area of interest and complete a literature-review research paper, identifying and evaluating pertinent empirical research. Open to all masters and doctoral students.
TH 560 - Proseminar in Music Cognition. The primary student objective in this course is to engage in professional-level research in an area of music cognition. Students will design and carry out an experiment or a project in cognitive modelling (computational). Intended for PhD theory majors (others by permission).
Theory PhD students who have room in their Programs of Study for only one music cognition course should take TH 560. This course best prepares them in empirical and data-analysis methodology to engage in music-cognitive research in the future, as a dissertation or other research area of interest.
Those who envision a specialization in music cognition are encouraged to take both courses, for both breadth (TH 460) and depth of original research (TH 560). TH 460 is also very appropriate for music theory pedagogy majors and/or upper division undergraduate theory majors.
Th480 - Advanced Harmony and Composition. Here is a syllabus (pdf).
