Introduction

Marie Rolf is Professor of Music Theory and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at the Eastman School of Music. Under her leadership, new diploma and certificate programs in Orchestral Studies, Ethnomusicology, Pedagogy, and Sacred Music have been developed and implemented. She also grants approximately 350 graduate awards annually and chairs the interdepartmental committees that oversee all graduate curricula and policies at Eastman. She served as Chair of the Theory Department (1990-95), during which time the MA in Theory Pedagogy was developed and first offered and other initiatives took place.

Rolf’s research interests range from analysis and performance, keyboard skills, and the music and manuscripts of Debussy and Mozart, to the pedagogy of music theory. Her articles and reviews appear in Debussy Studies, Haydn Studies, the Cahiers Debussy, the Mozart Jahrbuch, Music Theory Spectrum, The Musical Quarterly, Nineteenth-Century Music, MLA Notes, among other journals and books. Rolf is the editor of the critical edition of Debussy’s La Mer, published by Durand, and currently she is editing a volume of early songs for the Œuvres complètes de Claude Debussy. She is also the editor-arranger of Mozart’s Rondo for Horn in E-flat, KV 371, published by Bärenreiter, which is the first published edition of the work that incorporates the sixty new bars of music brought to light in 1991 by Rolf. In fall 2004, Rolf published a monograph and transcription of an "unknown" early song by Claude Debussy entitled "Les Papillons." She has lectured in London, Paris, Geneva, Melbourne, Montreal, and throughout the United States. In addition, she has concertized as a pianist, collaborating with musicians such as Marcia Baldwin, Jan DeGaetani, Robert Spillman, Millard Taylor, and Francis Tursi.
